Small Appliance Dealers

Why don’t more companies have Canadian web sites or at least Canadian content?
I am amazed at the number of companies that operate in Canada but don’t have any Canadian content on their sites, let alone a dedicated .ca site. For instance, they’ll have a form to put in your contact info, but the drop-down lists will only show US states and will only accept US format zip codes. If you do a “retailer search” or “dealer search” you have to put in a US zip code. I’m talking about companies that have been doing business in Canada for a very long time, like Black & Decker (small appliances) and Normark (Rapala fishing lures). Black & Decker sells bread machines through Zellers and Canadian Tire, but bread machines aren’t even shown as an available product at the B&D web site.
How can we pressure these companies to change their attitude, without boycotting their products?
Actually, don’t be surprised. If you take a look at the Canadian market place, we are pretty small. Obviously this is globally speaking. I mean why spend the extra money on the publicity when the companies know that we probably only represent a small percentage of their sales as compared to our American cousins?
AS for forcing them, there are methods that are presently being used in other areas that work, at least partially, to ensure Canadian content and interests are looked after. Examples would include Bell Expressvu, who do not air commercials that are from the US during a program that is being broadcasted into Canada. Or magazines that are obligated by law to have Canadian content, such as advertisements, in issues that are aimed at the Canadian market.
We could also go another way, like Quebec has done for the french language. The Quebec gov’t makes companies translate movies, video games, and all product labels into french before issuing permits to sell.
Maybe this can be done on a national level, but I would imagine that we would have to badger Ottawa into doing something.
