Operating a business sustainably is more than a fad — it has become an
expected part of doing business. This expectation not only comes from
customers, but from an organization’s employees, regulators and business
colleagues. They expect that a company will conduct its business in an
environmentally friendly way when possible.
The puzzle for many business owners and managers is how to green their
operations affordably in the face of such economic uncertainty.
Dr. Theresa Barker, a sustainability expert who runs BARK Consults, argues
that companies often can implement simple measures to become both greener and
more profitable. Dr. Barker has 20 years of industry experience with a Ph.D.
in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Washington.
“Many of the steps companies can take to improve sustainability also will
improve their efficiency, and reduce their use of expensive resources,”
explained Dr. Barker. “To guide them, we begin with a detailed survey to
pinpoint specific processes that can be improved, and identify green
technologies that help companies save money and reduce their environmental
impact.”
